Causes of Cerebral Palsy

While there is no known single cause of Cerebral Palsy, research suggests a number of possible causes for CP, such as:
  • Maternal infections such as:
    • German measles(rubella)
    • chickenpox (varicella)
    • cytomegalovirus
    • toxoplasmosis
    • syphilis
    • abnormal thyroid function
  • Infant infections such as:
    • meningitis
    • viral encephalitis
  • Multiple births
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Strokes
  • Lack of oxygen and asphyxia
  • Severe jaundice and/or Rh incompatibility
  • Low birth weight and preterm birth
  • Malnutrition
  • Alcohol and poisonous chemicals

  • Low Birth Weight 35%- 40%
  • Other (maternal factors, etc.) 22.5%
  • Congenital Brain Abnormality 6%-10%
  • Infections 5%-10%
  • Intrauterine ischemic event 5%-10%
  • Intrapartumasphyxia 9%
  • Metabolic Errors 5%
  • Genetic and/or Chromosomal 2.5%
